A New Chapter

My mark has been made on the employee height chart on the wall at Espresso Royale, symbolically marking the close of that chapter of my life, at least for now.

Coffee shops are wonderful.  I believe they are the most wonderful indoor public spaces our modern society provides.  To me they create an environment that brings out the best qualities of home, that everyone can experience together.  Warmth, delightful smells, friendly faces, comfort, routine, chaos, serenity, memories.  Espresso Royale has certainly been my home for the past year and a half, one that has nurtured me to grow, and learn, and realize, and find my way.

The bond that we all share at work is unusual and extraordinary.  As a staff, we seem to all breathe as one, bound together by friendships, relationships, love, respect, loyalty, trust, and confidence, we find ourselves as each others’ therapists, life savers, critics, roommates, partners, confidants, accomplices, and everything else in between.  If there is a void, Espresso Royale can fill it, or so it has been in my life since I began my time working there.   The work is hard, and involved, and at times all-consuming, but the yield is always rewarding and sweet and forgiving.  There are times when I feel like all my roads lead to and from Espresso Royale, that I am intrinsically linked to that place, and that the people that have come to me through my work there have been pivotal in my being.  Of that I am actually certain.

Letting go of that part of my life is startling and life altering, but I know that there are other paths to take, endeavors to make, sights to see, people to meet, memories to cherish, and stories to discover.  Farewell Espresso Royale, I leave you with my favorite yoga closing:

May the long time sun
Shine upon you,
All love surround you,
And the pure light within you
Guide your way on.

(kundalini yoga – farewell blessing)
